Switching Models & Providers
How to switch between AI models and providers in FiveForge Desktop. Provider picker, model picker, and automatic fallback.
Switching Models
You can change models at any time during a session to better suit your current task.
How to Switch
Open the provider dropdown
Click the provider pill in the chat input area to open the provider dropdown.
Select a provider
Select a different provider if desired (FiveForge AI or Open Models).
Pick a model
Use the model picker to choose a specific model within the selected provider.
Automatic Fallback
If a model hits its rate limit, FiveForge will automatically fall back to an available model. You will see a notification when this occurs.
Cooldown Period
When a model is rate-limited, there is approximately a 25-minute cooldown before it becomes available again. During this time, use a different model or wait for the cooldown to expire.
History Preservation
Your conversation history is fully preserved when switching models. The AI continues with the full context of your previous messages.
